Thathri, July 3 — Government Degree College (GDC) Thathri, in collaboration with the Chenab Times Foundation (CTF), has announced the launch of an online essay writing competition centred on the theme of “Chenabi Identity.” The competition is designed to engage students in exploring the cultural, linguistic, and social dimensions of the Chenab region in Jammu and Kashmir.
The event is open to students of GDC Thathri, with entries accepted in English, Urdu, or local dialects such as Kashmiri and Bhaderwahi. The initiative aims to raise awareness and promote critical thinking around the term “Chenabi,” which represents the people, languages, and cultural identity associated with the Chenab Valley.
The term “Chenabi” serves as an umbrella identity for the diverse ethnic and linguistic groups inhabiting the Chenab Valley, including Kishtwari, Sarazi, Bhaderwahi, Pogli, and others. While each group retains its unique dialect, traditions, and cultural practices, the shared geography, history, and socio-cultural ties of the Chenab region give rise to a collective identity expressed through the term “Chenabi.”
According to Anzer Ayoob, President of Chenab Times Foundation, the competition seeks to “encourage young voices to reflect on their roots and document regional identity through personal and creative expression.”
Tahir Bilal, Secretary of the Foundation, added that such efforts are “essential in preserving cultural diversity and bridging gaps between oral tradition and modern narratives.”
Students have been asked to express their interest through a Google Form shared by college faculty. The last date for interest submission is 5th July 2025, after which a topic or prompt will be announced. All entries will be submitted online.
The top 10 essays will be published on TheChenabTimes.com, a regional platform dedicated to journalism, culture, and community voices. Selected participants will also receive Certificates of Appreciation.
In an official communication, the Principal of GDC Thathri formally acknowledged and supported the collaboration, noting that the initiative aligns with the college’s educational mission to foster creative engagement and cultural exploration among students.
