Chenab Times Foundation Calls for Urgent Action on Local Language Education in Jammu and Kashmir
The Chenab Times Foundation today issued a compelling call to action for the Jammu and Kashmir government to prioritize the integration of local languages into the educational curriculum, following Rajasthan's recent announcement to implement teaching in local dialects from the next academic session.
Background:
Rajasthan has set a commendable example by planning to introduce education in local languages like Marwari and Mewati in Bal Vatikas across nine districts, starting next academic year. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020's emphasis on multilingual education to foster better understanding and cultural continuity among students.
Concerns in Jammu and Kashmir:
In stark contrast, languages such as Bhaderwahi, Sarazi, and the official language, Kashmiri, are facing a decline in educational prominence within Jammu and Kashmir. Despite the constitutional rights under Article 350A and the guidelines of NEP 2020, these languages are not sufficiently represented or preserved in the educational framework.
Statement from Anzer Ayoob, President of Chenab Times Foundation:
"We applaud Rajasthan's initiative to embrace the linguistic diversity of its regions in education. However, we cannot ignore the cultural and linguistic erosion happening here in Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmiri, along with other local languages, requires urgent attention to preserve our heritage and comply with national educational policies. We urge the J&K government to act swiftly to incorporate these languages into the school curriculum, following the successful models set by other states."
Recommendations:
Curriculum Inclusion: Make local languages a part of the regular curriculum, especially at foundational levels, to ensure better learning outcomes and cultural preservation.
Teacher Recruitment: Implement programs similar to Rehbar-e-Zaban to train and employ teachers proficient in local languages.
Policy Implementation: Accelerate the application of NEP 2020 principles regarding mother tongue education in Jammu and Kashmir.
